New Consumer Travel Magazine Redefines Green for Enlightened Explorers
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Want to know how to "go green" on your next vacation? For starters, you need to know that "green travel" involves more than just concern for the planet.
"When it comes to travel, environmental responsibility is only half the picture," said Modern Traveler Editor and Co-founder Frances Figart. "As modern travelers, we can also make choices that improve the wellbeing of the people in the places we visit."
Modern Traveler is a new magazine dedicated to informing travelers about the myriad of responsible and sustainable travel options available to them. Published quarterly beginning with the Summer 2008 issue, Modern Traveler, the magazine for enlightened explorers, will provide readers with easy, fun and exciting ways to make a big difference through small choices.
The magazine will showcase responsible tour operator companies, destinations, attractions and other travel professionals around the world – and it will feature celebrities sampling responsible travel options. It also will highlight an array of travel-related products, offer health and wellness tips for travelers, and introduce new trends and ideas in culinary tourism, adventure travel, voluntourism and cultural travel experiences the entire family can enjoy together.
"Modern Traveler is more than just a magazine,” said Publisher and Co-founder Bob McElwee. “We will offer a quarterly print magazine on eco-friendly paper, but when people join the MT family, they become part of an entire movement that is sweeping across the planet and making a revolutionary difference … one traveler at a time.”
In addition to the magazine, members of the MT community will also learn more about responsible travel via talk shows with celebrities and industry experts on MT Radio, an online newsletter from the editor with green travel news, and another newsletter from the publisher with insights into the world of green business.
"Travel by its very nature has an impact on the environment, on culture and on the economies of local peoples who play host to tourism throughout the world," said Figart. "Modern Traveler is designed for people who want to make travel choices that result in some positive impact on the environment and the people they meet. We want to show our members how they can vacation in a way that has some positive impact in any destination and on any budget."
Modern Traveler will be printed on New Leaf EcoMatte (FSC) paper, made with Green-e® certified renewable energy, 50 percent de-inked recycled fiber and processed chlorine-free. By using this product, Modern Traveler saves 204 million BTUs, 13,755 pounds of solid waste, 133,271 gallons of water, 229 fully grown trees and keeps 29,266 pounds of greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere each quarter.
Modern Traveler is dedicated to supporting the movement toward ethical, responsible and sustainable travel by educating readers about responsible tourism and promoting those who work to provide sustainable travel opportunities. It will be printed on eco-friendly paper and created using sustainable printing techniques. One percent of Modern Traveler's subscription revenue will support indigenous or local peoples practicing sustainable tourism. For more information visit www.moderntravelermagazine.com.
